Posted May 19, 2025

Client: Coventry City Council Location: Whitley Depot, Coventry

Sector: Public Sector / Local Government

Service: Solar PV Design & Installation System Size: 44 kWp

Overview

Coventry City Council recently took a major step towards its sustainability and carbon reduction goals with the installation of a 44 kWp rooftop solar PV system at its Whitley Depot.

Delivered by R&M, this project marked the team’s first in-house solar installation—successfully completed on time, on budget, and with zero disruption to depot operations.

Working with the Council’s Energy team the installation supports the council’s long-term ambition to decarbonise its building estate, reduce energy costs, and generate clean electricity on-site.

Project Highlights

100 high-performance Jinko Solar panels (440W each)

SolarEdge optimisers and inverters for maximum efficiency

✅ Estimated significant energy cost savings over the system’s lifespan

✅ Zero emissions, zero downtime during installation

✅ Scaling solar adoption across the council's buildings

Why This Matters

With rising energy prices and growing pressure to meet environmental targets, public and private sector organisations alike are turning to renewable energy solutions. This project demonstrates how solar can be reliably delivered by in-house teams when backed by the right planning, technology, and support.

The R&M Approach

🔧 Turnkey Delivery – From design and procurement to installation and commissioning

📈 Performance-Focused – High-efficiency components to maximise return on investment

🛠 Skill Building – Empowered our in-house team to deliver future installations

🌱 Sustainability-Driven – Aligned directly with the council’s decarbonisation strategy

The Outcome

Since going live, the Whitley Depot system has begun generating clean, renewable electricity—cutting operating costs and reducing the council’s carbon footprint. More importantly, it has laid the groundwork for similar installations across other council-owned sites. “This project has proven that we can deliver high-quality solar installations internally while contributing to long-term energy savings and environmental impact. It’s a model we’re excited to replicate.”
