Refurbishment of Radford Youth Centre, Coventry

Posted June 16, 2025

Project Overview

Radford Youth Centre, located within the Radford Community Centre in Coventry, had not seen significant investment in many years. As a result, the building’s infrastructure had become outdated, inefficient, and no longer fit for purpose. Recognising the essential role youth services play in the community, a refurbishment project was launched to bring the centre back to life.

The project was delivered in partnership with R&R, with R&M responsible for the full scope of mechanical and electrical (M&E) works.

Project Objectives

Upgrade aging M&E systems to current standards

Improve energy efficiency, comfort, and safety

Create a flexible and modern space for youth activities

Maximise usable floor and wall space to enhance the centre’s functionality

R&M’s Mechanical & Electrical Solutions

R&M provided a full suite of mechanical and electrical services, transforming the building into a safe, welcoming, and energy-efficient facility:

Full Electrical Rewire: The electrical infrastructure was fully replaced to meet modern compliance and support the centre’s future needs.

New Boiler & Heating System: We installed a new, energy-efficient boiler and a comprehensive heating system to ensure reliable warmth throughout the facility.

• Energy-Efficient Lighting: Tamlite LED fittings were used throughout to reduce energy consumption, provide excellent illumination, and minimise maintenance.

Space-Saving Heating Installation: To preserve valuable wall and floor space for youth activities, we installed Biddle heating cassettes within the new ceiling grid—delivering efficient heat distribution while keeping spaces open and flexible.

The Value of Youth Centres

Youth centres like Radford are more than just buildings—they are cornerstones of the community.

They provide young people with a safe, inclusive environment where they can engage in recreational activities, access support, receive mentorship, and develop valuable life skills.

In areas where opportunities may be limited, youth centres serve as vital platforms for empowerment, social cohesion, and early intervention.

Project Impact

The transformation of Radford Youth Centre has delivered a modern, functional, and energy-efficient space that can better support the needs of Coventry’s young people. Thanks to the strong partnership between R&R and R&M, the centre is now equipped to serve its community with improved facilities that are safer, more sustainable, and more adaptable to future needs.

Conclusion

This project highlights the importance of reinvesting in community spaces and the positive outcomes that can be achieved through collaborative partnerships. R&M are proud to have played a part in revitalising a space that will continue to support and inspire the youth of Radford for years to come.
