Case Study: Boiler Refurbishment at Hillfields Nursery, Coventry

Client Overview:

Hillfields Nursery, located in Coventry, provides early years education and care for children in a nurturing and safe environment. As part of their ongoing efforts to improve the facility’s infrastructure, the nursery recognized the need to upgrade their heating system to ensure reliable warmth and comfort for both staff and children, while also reducing energy consumption and improving overall efficiency.

Project Objective:

The primary objective of the project was to refurbish the existing heating system, which included the removal of outdated boilers and associated components, and the installation of new, energy-efficient boilers, pipework, and controls. The nursery wanted to improve heating reliability, lower maintenance costs, and make the system more energy-efficient, while minimizing disruption to the daily activities of the nursery.

Scope of Work:

The project involved the complete removal and replacement of the old heating system. This included:

• Removal of all existing heating boilers, flues, insulation, circulation pumps, controls, isolation valves, and redundant pipework.

• Provision and installation of new heating boilers, flues, circulation pumps, pipework, distribution pipework, gas lines, insulation, control and isolating valves, and associated equipment.

• Installation of a new control panel for better management of the heating system.

• Ensuring minimal disruption to nursery activities by completing the work in two phases.

Key Steps in the Project:

1. Initial Assessment and Planning: Our team conducted a thorough survey of the existing heating system, identifying areas that required immediate attention and ensuring that the new system would meet the nursery’s heating needs. We developed a detailed plan that would allow the work to be completed in two phases, ensuring that heating remained available during critical times.

2. Phase 1: Removal of Old System and Preparation for New Installation: o In the first phase, all the old heating boilers, circulation pumps, flues, and redundant pipework were carefully removed. This step also involved removing the insulation, controls, and isolation valves, which were outdated and inefficient.

o To ensure safety and avoid any interruption in heating, the team implemented temporary solutions to provide heating to the nursery during the changeover period.

o The boiler room was then cleared and prepared for the installation of the new system, including ensuring that the necessary space and conditions were available for the new equipment.

3. Phase 2: Installation of New System:

o In the second phase, the team installed new heating boilers, which were selected based on efficiency, size, and the heating requirements of the nursery. o New flues, circulation pumps, and distribution pipework were installed, ensuring proper flow and heat distribution throughout the nursery building.

o We installed new control panels and associated control and isolating valves, which provided more advanced management capabilities, allowing for greater control over the heating system’s operation.

o The team also reinstalled and upgraded the insulation around pipes to improve energy efficiency.

4. System Testing and Commissioning:

Once all components were installed, the system was thoroughly tested to ensure that everything was functioning correctly. The boilers were tested for efficiency, safety, and reliability. The control panel was configured and tested to allow easy operation, and the entire system was monitored to ensure optimal performance.

5. Handover and Training: After successful testing and commissioning, the new heating system was handed over to the nursery’s staff. We provided full documentation and conducted training on the operation of the new control panel, ensuring that staff members were comfortable with the system’s management and troubleshooting procedures.

Outcome:

Improved Heating Efficiency: The new boilers and associated components provided a significant improvement in heating efficiency, ensuring that the nursery was consistently warm while reducing energy consumption and operating costs.

Enhanced Control and Reliability: With the new control panel and upgraded valves, the nursery now has better control over the heating system, allowing for more precise temperature regulation and easier troubleshooting.

Minimal Disruption: By completing the project in two phases, the team ensured that the heating system was never completely out of service, minimizing disruption to nursery operations. Temporary heating measures were put in place to keep the building comfortable throughout the project.

Sustainability: The new system’s energy efficiency contributes to the nursery’s sustainability goals, reducing its environmental impact and lowering carbon emissions.

Conclusion:

The successful boiler refurbishment project at Hillfields Nursery has not only improved the overall comfort of the building but has also provided the nursery with a more energy-efficient, reliable, and cost-effective heating solution. The project, which took approximately eight weeks to complete, was carefully planned and executed in two phases to ensure minimal disruption to the nursery’s operations.

The new system is set to provide long-term benefits in terms of energy savings, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
